Lead Data Scientist


The role

You will be an integral part of driving data science projects and ensuring that the business is getting maximum value from our data science team, research infrastructure, and data.  While there is scope for hands-on work, this is a potential management track role.  Depending upon the candidate, up to 75% of your time could be devoted to management responsibilities.  You will be working alongside several other senior members of the team to help support projects and drive business and/or tech initiatives as well as having the option to mentor and management juniors

The Data Science team is part of a larger data and analytics group that numbers around 100 people.  This wider group has separate functions for Data Analytics, BI, and ETL as well as a separate Big Data team that contains Admins, DevOps, Data Engineers and Developers.  This structure allows the Data Science team to focus on the core data science work and solve some of the hardest problems in the business. 

As an online high transaction business, Kindred Group collects a huge amount of data. This includes data about our customer's betting and game play activity, their interests and motivations and much more. We have invested heavily in Big Data technologies and associated analytical tools that enables our data scientist to provide innovative solutions using the latest techniques and technologies.

A non-inclusive list of project categories is: AML/KYC, payment/transaction fraud detection, odds setting and risk management, customer propensity models, personalisation and recommendations, cybersecurity, and problem gambler detection.


What you will do

  • Help drive the implementation in production of data science models and process
  • Help set the vision for our 3rd generation data and research platform
  • Work with the data science team to create KPIs and processes to measure the effectiveness of data science solutions
  • Manage/mentor juniors
  • Plan and manage data science research projects
  • Apply machine learning methods to solve business problems


Your experience

  • Circa 5+ years commercial experience in a data science or similar role
  • PhD or Masters in a numerate discipline
  • Strong stakeholder management skills
  • Ideally experience managing/mentoring juniors
  • Experience putting models and processes into production via hands-on implementation or managing/driving the implementation process
  • Good understanding of big data technologies and ideally cloud solutions
  • Strong Python skills and ideally Scala or alternatively one of C++, C#, or Java
  • Solid understanding of statistical modelling and machine learning
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to explain complex topics to stakeholders
